No love for polygamy

While I was in Salt Lake City, a good work friend and beer-buddy of mine bought me a Utah souvenier.  A Polygamy Porter mug.  This is a reference to a Utah brewed beer that is popular (at least for its name).

As it happens, when I got back home, the Vancouver office was having a “funky mug contest” to promote earth day. The idea being that you should bring a coffee mug and dishes to work instead of using up the disposable cups.

I entered the polygamy mug, but alas it did not place amongst the finalists.  However, I did receive many compliments.  Better luck next year!

New Craft Project

While browsing around Etsy, I saw these beautiful handspun pussy willows made of merino wool and cashmere.  I remembered that my mom used to always pick pussy willows when we were younger, and I thought they would make a great mother’s day gift.

The Etsy ones are $20 a branch, which is insane. And as you may know, if I think I can make something myself, I will.  After some searching, I found this free pattern on Berroco’s site: http://www.berroco.com/exclusives/centerpiece/centerpiece.html.

I’ve been working on it using heavy worsted yarn that I had in my stash.  The buds are coming out much larger than intended, and the wire I’m using is bending under the weight. I haven’t figured out how to compensate yet.  I’ll post some pics soon.

Random US Observations

3 things I’ve noticed since I’ve been in the US:

Diet Dr. Pepper is available everywhere.  I guess the US isn’t all bad.

Expelled is getting a lot of commericial time in Utah.

The new US currency has color.

First Day in the New Job

I arrived in Salt Lake City last night and spent today in the office.  Yesterday was sunny and really warm.  Today it clouded over and snowed!  Like Vancouver, if you don’t like the weather, wait 5 minutes.

I spent some time with my new boss and the rest of my new team today.  Everyone was very easy to get along with, and I think I’m really going to enjoy working with them.  This position is going to be very different than what I’ve been doing for the past couple years, and I’m a little intimidated by the learning curve.  I am someone who hates not being an expert at what I am doing, so that initial ramp-up is always really awkward and uncomfortable for me.  But I am excited by the fact that the new role will challenge me in different ways and I know I’ll learn a lot.

First Post!

Ok, so I’ve tried my hand at a blog before, and failed miserably.  If you know me well, you know I get anxious over stupid things.  My last blog became a sourse of stress  i.e. “I haven’t posted lately”, “I don’t know what to write”, “aahhh”.  But lately I’ve been thinking of things I would post if I could, so I thought I’d give it another try.

If you know me well, you also know I can be antisocial at times. I’ll do my best to update regularly, but I make no promises!

I’ve been doing lots of crafty things lately, so I’ll try to post picks/instructions etc as I go.

Also, I’m starting a new job on Monday! I’m still with eBay, but I’m starting in a new Project Manager role which will be very different from what I have been doing.  I will be in Salt Lake City next week meeting with my new boss and learning the ropes. I’ll try to post some updates from the road.

I will be in SLC for Loki’s birthday, he is turning 3 next week.  Hopefully Joe will post some cute pics. Loki traditionally gets a steak and a new toy for his birthday, which he quickly devours and disembowels respectively.
