Not A Fluke

Paul B, Kelly Beckett, Jim Allison and I played golf at Kinkora’s yesterday (58 par, just like Cheam Golf) and I shot a solid 75 (39 on the front nine and 36 on the back) and only lost one ball.

I guess I’m getting better at this game!

Thanks to Jeff Kasper for the discount!

Golfing breakthrough

As those who’ve golfed with me will attest, I’m not that great a golfer. This year signals only my second year of playing, so I’ve got an excuse. My usual score at Cheam Golf (a par 56 “not-quite-executive course”) is around 88. My best-ever score there was an 80, and last week I shot an 81.

Yesterday I was on fire. I parred the first three holes. On the fourth I hit the green and choked to a four-putt. But on 9 I got a birdie (my first in a long time) with a 35 foot putt and finished the front 9 with a personal-record-shattering 32 strokes. My second 9 wasn’t as good but still a “good day for me” score of 40 for a total of 72.

I even won a skin of $15 for the birdie on hole 9! Man, it sure felt good after dealing with days of computer hardware frustrations!

Winter Golf

As Dave mentioned we got in a round of golf on Friday. We went to Cheam Golf, an executive par 58 here in Chilliwack and my first 10 holes were great, snagging me my first official birdie on the tenth. After that I went back to my old ways and had some awful tee-offs and worse putting. I ended shooting a 79 which is still my best score there.

Dave shot an 80 so I won. He’d forgotten his putter so I’m sure he would’ve beat me with a full set.

Winter fees were $10, but thanks to buying ten driving range tokens we both got $5 off, so it came to a measly $5 to play. If the weather gets good I’ll definitely head out for that deal again.

Wack Some Balls

Saturday’s forecast is “Cloudy with showers” at 9 degrees C. It’s not quite golfing weather, but it should be plenty good enough to go to the driving range.

Who’s with me?!

My Golf Record

In googling for just what the handicap means and how it works (none of my golfing buddies knew!) I found MyGolfRecord.com which seems to be an excellent site for keeping track of your personal golfing scores.

It lets you add courses you play on, which are then available to everyone else. For example, Kinkora wasn’t in there, so I added it using the data from our scorecards. Now that data is there for everyone.

I can even link to my profile so anyone can see what a bad golfer I really am.

Also, Kinkora needs a web site. And I need to golf more… anyone else seeing what I’m thinking?

Golf at Kinkora, Part 2

We went golfing at Kinkora again this morning, though a little later than we normally do and the heat got to some of the weaker (or more foolish, as they weren’t wearing a hat) of us. My distance game was great, especially when using my driver. Hole 5 is 276 yards and I creamed the ball with my 1 Wood (which isn’t made of wood, strangely enough) and it ended up only about 30 yards from the flag. That’s a 240 yard drive. On a few other holes I was easily hitting 180-200 yards with a nice straight drive with the same club.

My real weakness is that my chip shots are awful. My practise swings feel right and then when I take the actual swing I almost always end up not going down far enough and hitting the ball with the bottom of the club rather than the face, so the ball goes straight along the ground and much too far.

My putting was quite bad today as well. I had a chance at a birdie on three holes today, with moderately difficult puts and not one of them was anywhere near going in.

But I’m getting better and more confident, and I can identify my weaknesses so I can take time to work on them. Time to hit the driving range and practise chipping!

Oh, and for the record I shot an 85 — that’s four strokes better than the last time we played.

Golf Score - Kinkora

For anyone that cares, I shot an 89 at Kinkora. Par is 56, so that’s “three strokes under a double-bogey every hole” which for me is really good. My chipping sucks, my putting is inconsistent, and my drives are either good but short or long and slicing/hooking.

But it’s a start.

Fore!

I’ve been getting in to golf lately. Before this year, I’d probably played a half-dozen times in my life. But I finally bit the bullet and got myself a set of clubs. Though it’s a fairly expensive outlay (over $350 with everything including bag & glove) I’d been paying about $20 each time I played just to rent POS(Piece of Shit) clubs at the course. My clubs are “Wilson Ultra” if anyone knows anything.

Dave Schneider went to the Cheam Golf driving range today and I hit three buckets of balls. Because I know I’ve got the strength to longball it, I often end up trying to crush it without getting the proper swing down first. So I’m concentrating on holding off and getting my technique better, and once I’ve got that I can increase my club speed and use this big upper body I’ve got.

The main drawback of golf is that because of the heat we have to play either earlier in the day (tomorrow at Kinkora at 8:06AM! Gah!) or later when all the mosquitos are out. Those of you who know me know that I’m not a morning person. About the only time I’m up around 8AM is when I haven’t gone to sleep yet. And also, mosquitos love me.

But I’m enjoying it, and shall troop on.
