Anybody remember this fat guy?

Finished Medifast at 170 lbs

Same shorts!  78.5 lbs difference! One year timeframe and two separate Medifast runs (3 months long and then 4 months this year).

Last year at this time (end of June, actually) I was 248.5 lbs.  This morning I weighed in at 170.0 lbs exactly.  I graduated high school (20 years ago!) at 210 lbs.  I haven’t weighed this little since probably Grade 8.

Here are some more shots… FOR THE LADIES.

Here’s a (large) animation blending from start to finish (just the two shots, no actual in-between morphing):

I may be a huge geek…

but at least I’m now a skinny huge geek.

Ready for X-Men 3!

Down to 173.8 lbs this morning.  3.8 left and I’m at my target weight.  Then I transition out of Medifast and switch to “eat right and exercise” and get back some of the muscle I lost.

The Pain!

Played the first road hockey of the season yesterday.  I tried to take it easy.  Not only am I low on energy because of Medifast but it’s the first time back after months of doing very little physical activity.

Despite that:  ouch.  My shoulders hurt from the (wimply) slap shots I was taking, my right knee really hurts from the pavement impact travelling up from my foot.  I’m hobbling up and down the stairs.  The rest of my body just has a general “Ow fuck what did we do yesterday?” feel to it.

It hurts, but it’s a good hurt.  It reminds me that though I may have lost weight, I’m not actually in shape again.  So if the weather’s good I’ll be there next week, and the week after, and so on.  Once I’m done Medifast I’ll be exercising more often.

Mediums ‘R’ Us

Went for a haircut today and wandered through Metrotown afterwards.  I saw a t-shirt that caught my eye and went in to try it on.  I knew some of the new Large shirts I’d bought after my first Medifast run-through were starting to not feel as fitted as before, so I tried on a Medium.  And it fit!

Medifasting Again

My new order of Medifast food/shakes arrived yesterday and I’ve jumped feet-first into it today.  Since completing my three months of Medifast last year I gained back nine pounds right away, and then over the holidays I gained another nine (thanks Mom!) putting me at 220 lbs.

I’ve got two months of food for now and might do a third.  I’m aiming hard for my target weight of 180 lbs.  If I can get a bit under that (to make up for the inevitable 8 pound gain after I’m done) that’d be great, but I’m not going to hurt myself doing it.

I’ll be keeping a new weight/body fat percentage journal for this diet as well as before/after pictures.  I’ll present them at the end, like I did before.

Medifast Completed

Update: Lots of people are finding this through Google while searching for Medifast.  This is my first Medifast run, my latest you can find here (I lost another 30 lbs!)

I’ve finished my three month Medifast diet and the results have been phenomenal. I started exactly twelve weeks ago at 248.5 lbs and this morning I weighed in at 201.2 lbs. I graduated high school at 210 lbs! I haven’t been this thin for over twenty years!

That’s not to say I’m done this transformation. At around 200 lbs I still have about 20 lbs left to lose to be the right weight. I’m now weaning myself off of Medifast and on to real food, but I’m going to eat right and now ramp up the exercise. Tonight or tomorrow I’m going to the Chilliwack Aquatic Centre and renewing my membership. I’ll be hitting the cross-trainer there at least every two days, and probably more. In a few weeks I’ll start adding some weights to my program, and will be pretty much doing Body For Life again, though with my schedule I’m not sure now if I can actually do it as strictly as I should.

Ok, want to see the fatty I was next to the not-quite-so-fatty that I am? Here you go:

Crazy!

Here’s a quick animation I did between the beginning and ending poses:

And for those who give a crap, here’s the graph of my weight loss and body fat loss:

As the weight and body fat readings fluctuate (the big spikes in weight/bf on the graph are almost always right after my road hockey nights, showing the intense exercise does in fact not work well with the Medifast diet) so I’ve had Excel add in a standard line showing the average rate of decline. The dots are the actual readings.

Medifast Update

I’ve done seven weeks of Medifast now and I’m very happy to announce that I’ve lost over 30lbs.

Start Weight: 248.5 lbs
Today’s Weight: 217.8 lbs

I’m continuing to keep track in Excel and it predicts that when I’m done (in five weeks) I’ll be down to 199.4 lbs. I haven’t been under 200 since junior high!

As noted, the plan is to take 2-4 weeks afterwards getting used to eating real food all day (and honestly, enjoy myself just a little) and then I’m going to do Body For Life’s 12 week program and exercise off the remaining fat and build back muscle.

Medifast Progress

I’m at day 30 now and I’m just over 22 lbs (10 kg) lighter than I was when I started. I’ve been keeping track of both my weight and body fat percentage (we have a nifty scale that shows both after you input your sex, height and age):
Medifast Chart

The body fat readings waver, I’m guessing because it simply isn’t all that accurate, but you can see the definite strong progression downwards. I had planned to do this for two months but with the predictions from Excel I’m going to do a third month. Mel is so impressed she’s going to join me and do 6 weeks herself.

The two odd fluctuations in the chart represent the days following me playing road hockey. Medifast warns that you should avoid intense exercise, but I’m not giving up hockey. It has hurt the weight loss a bit, but I’m probably healthier.

So Hungry

I’m Medifast dieting.

I’m not sure why I haven’t mentioned this yet. Perhaps because I was worried it wouldn’t work, or that it’d be too hard or not right for me. But it’s working. It’s difficult, but it’s working. I’ve now been eating nothing but Medifast shakes (and soups) and one meal of “lean meat + 2 cups of green veggies” a day and I’m down from my starting weight of 248lbs to 231lbs. I’m now lighter than I have been in almost ten years.

Medifast is a very strict super-low-calorie diet. The shakes you eat contain just enough of everything you need to get you through the day. Your body recognizes it isn’t getting a lot of caloric intake so it starts eating its fat stores. This is a condition known as ketosis.

My original plan was to do this for two months but with plotting my weight loss with Excel and using its predictions I’ll probably be doing a third. After I’m done I’ll go back to eating right and exercising and a month after that I’m planning on doing another Body For Life 12 week program to rebuild whatever muscle mass I might have lost (which shouldn’t be much, according to what I’ve read).

Crosstraining

As mentioned earlier, Mel, Dave Schneider and I finished our 12 week Body For Life programs about a month ago. Since then we’ve all sort of taken the time off. Dave & I played road hockey a few times, but the weather kept us away most weekends. I’ve gained a few pounds back, but the biggest change in the time off is my energy level, which has really dropped, and I miss what I had before.

So Dave & I renewed our gym memberships and went in to do crosstraining today, and plan to do it “every day” from now on. Of course, that means “every day we can spare the time” but it’ll be at least four days a week, and probably six.

The difference between my performance at the end of Body For Life and now is pretty big. My heart rate shot up almost immediately when I started the 20 minute crosstraining run, and I had to go pretty slowly to keep it down near my target heart rate. It was still better than the first time I got on the crosstrainer at the beginning of BFL(Body For Life) but I’m really looking forward to getting my wind back. I’m thinking it shouldn’t take long though, and after that, I’ll be just shedding off the pounds.
