Canadian DVD retailers don’t know the Canadian dollar is at par

I picked up Halo 3 at Future Shop at midnight last night, and planned to save myself a trip and pick up the special edition DVD of Knocked Up if I could.  Indeed, they had it ready up front to purchase along with the game, but the price was $27.99, and I remembered that Amazon.com was selling it for $19.99 US.  I decided to not pick it up and do some more price checking online.  But sure enough, Amazon.ca is selling it for $27.96!

Now before anyone claims this is due to import taxes or shipping, I’ll note that this price differentiation has been the same for years.  Back when the US dollar was worth $1.30 Canadian, Amazon.com DVDs sold for 1.3 times as much as Amazon.ca DVDs.  Now that the dollar is at par, they’re still selling at the same cost ratio!

Amazon.com won’t ship to Canada for free (.ca will if you order $35 or more worth of product) but a trial checkout shows that even with shipping costs the DVD would end up two dollars cheaper!  I also wouldn’t be paying tax on the purchase — yes at the border it should get GST added on, but small items rarely get processed for that, so there’s another $4 saved!

Hey Future Shop and Amazon.ca!  Start correcting your prices!

Win Some, Lose Some

Mel and I finished first and second respectively in our weekly poker game tonight, pulling in a nice pot.  We said our goodbyes and left to go to our car…

to find it had been sideswiped by some asshole fleeing the police.  He ditched his car about 30 feet from ours and the cops were there already and had his passenger cuffed on the street by the car.  They informed me they caught him a few blocks away.

I got an incident number, so it should all be covered by this jerk’s insurance.  The damage didn’t seem too bad — the front driver side fender was dented and scratched, the side mirror had been hit, and the tire rim had a chip out of it.  Rather than risk a blowout we called roadside assistance and had them come out and put my donut on.

Updated with photos!

Car damage, front driver’s side, showing “donut” spare on. Front angle of the damage Rim damage to original wheel. I wasn’t confident driving home on this so we put the donut spare on.

Update 2: Took it in to the Kirmac to get it the damage appraised and they told me the control arm on the car was damaged and he wouldn’t let me drive it home so we’re now driving a rental.  Our insurance covers $900 worth of rental costs so it’s all good — we’ve got a car that’s driveable and ours will be fixed.

Team Fortress 2 Beta!

Like many PC gamers I’ve been looking forward to Team Fortress 2 (TF2) release.  A while back, Valve Software announced that it would be released along with Half-Life 2: Episode 2, and a new game called “Portal”.  HL2:E2 was a no-brainer for me, and Portal looks really cool so I was already going to purchase the set.

Then they started showing off the character design.  Eschewing the push towards realism of other shooters, Valve decided on a highly stylized, almost cartoony look to the game.  Character silhouettes are exaggerated and their “class” is easy to recognize.  Textures are cell-shaded but GORGEOUS.

I wanted it before.  I really wanted it now.

Last week they let people pre-order what was now called “The Orange Box“, and noted that if you did you not only saved some money ($5) but you’d also be able to play the TF2 Beta starting yesterday.

Well, at midnight last night the beta became available.  And it’s better than I expected, and I was expecting “really really good”.  Here’s a screenshot, taken at the end of one round of play — I should have taken more during the actual game but I was having way too much fun!

TF2 Beta Screenshot
(note that if the popover is too big for you to see the “x” to close it, you can use ESC to remove it as well)

That’s a Heavy Weapons Guy (or “Heavy”) — the class with a huge gatling gun that can take a lot of damage.  When firing (or spinning up the gatling’s barrels) he moves very slowly and is vulnerable to Sniper fire.  The balance of classes is amazing.  Every class has an important job for the team.  Any time we didn’t have a certain class I’d be wishing someone would switch.  That’s impressive considering there are nine classes!  I tended to play the Engineer class, but when going on Offense I really enjoyed the Spy, and tried a bit of the Soldier.

The sense of humor they managed to get into a frenetic team-based first-person shooter is impressive, and everyone I played with was commenting positively throughout the game on how great it was.

Anyway, if you have a computer and Internet and you like shooters at all, this game is incredible.  Go buy The Orange Box because Half-Life 2 and the Episodes are also excellent.  These games should all run very well on an moderately new PC with a halfway decent video card.  If you preorder through Steam now, you can get into the Beta instantly!

Now I have to go to sleep, and try not to think of playing TF2.

Update:  It also keeps stats!

It’s Only A Theory!

Only A Theory

No, that’s not too far.  That’s called using ridicule to show the weakness in creationist arguments.
