So I’ve been playing World of Warcraft for the past month or so. It’s very good, though I’m not loving it as much as I loved City of Heroes when I started playing that. Still, it’s a fun distraction and I do enjoy playing it.
Last night I was playing on Kilrogg with my Tauren Warrior “Shaftaur” in the Barrens and people in General Chat start telling jokes, which leads to Dead Baby Jokes. I joined in and told one of my favorites and today I found this in my email inbox:
Realm: Kilrogg
Character Name: ShaftaurAccount Action: 72 Hour Suspension
Offense: Racial/Ethnic
This category includes both clear and masked language which:
. Promotes racial/ethnic hatred
. Is recognized as a racial/ethnic slur
. Alludes to symbols of racial/ethnic hatredDetails (Note - Times are listed in Greenwich Mean Time, GMT):
9/8/2005 6:41(GMT) Shaftaur General - The Barrens “What’s grosser than a million dead babies piled on top of each other?”
9/8/2005 6:41(GMT) Shaftaur General - The Barrens “One live one on the bottom eating his way out.”The actions detailed above have been deemed inappropriate for the World of Warcraft by the In-Game Support staff of Blizzard Entertainment. First off, I strongly protest the Racial/Ethnic tag. Putting that tag there is offensive to me. Certainly my joke was in bad taste, and now that I look at it, probably worthy of a warning to not do it again in a public channel. But even then, it’s BARELY worth a warning.
Look, this game has Undead characters who have rotting body parts, and every single one of them has the “Cannibalize” ability — to eat dead bodies to recuperate their own health.
And I get a 72 hour ban for a joke!
Boo, Blizzard GM who made that call, boo!

Boo-URNS you mean!
Never met anyone else named Puck…but you don’t look anything like me…imposter.
Puck “The Original White Meat”
I copped a 72 hour ban for saying a characters name (for instance chucknorisz) is the jewish version of that name i.e. the ’sz’ makes me think jewish chuck lol.
Got the email, 72 hours and racism tag. What a joke, blizzard are frankly a pack of self governing snide asshats.
You are correct, they did mess up the tag. Look under wwww.worldofwarcraft.com/policy and you’ll see that it’s under a different section.
But did you even bother to read what you wrote?
Please don’t whine when you do jokes like this. You’d get kicked out of a restaurant if you yelled this, why do you think this should be less?
I\’m looking on the bottom of that page and I see \”Unauthorized Account Access\”.
Look, \”Asdf\”, this is a game where you can play Undead characters who have an ability called \”Cannibalize\” where you eat a recently killed body to regain lost health. Tell me exactly where telling a dead baby joke in a game with Undead who eat dead people is against the rules.
Your argument about yelling in a restaurant doesn\’t follow. I\’d get kicked out of a restaurant for yelling anything. And if it was a restaurant that sold cannibal dishes, much like WoW has cannibal characters, they\’d only be angry at the yelling part.
THey are wrong entirely about the racial part. It happened to me to, i made a joke and blam i got a 72 hour suspension, i got it all cleared up and i got a Downage on my payment, so it’s allgood. just report it to a GM and makey our argument.
i dont agree with the band but you also have to realize that people out there actually do take offence if they have kids. soo mabey not a band but the thought of the joke is kinds in bad taste
Well, the joke was in poor taste, and was definetly a “warning” offense. I’ll bet everyone else got one too.
On another note, I too, am nicknamed Puck, and play WoW, and have a toon called “Shaftloren”. The similarites are mind-boggling to say the least. My nickname is based on my full name, so I was curious on where you got yours.
