Fullweb Alchemist

Ok, I stole the title from Walter

“The site” I’ve been working on these past few months has gone live today — it’s the official site for the Full Metal Alchemist Trading Card Game.

Holy Cow Design created and set up everything on the site — template, installation and modifcation of the CMS(Content Management System), additional plugin coding (including the cool card preview mouseover seen here — it’s Overlib, but we created the “mambot” that makes it incredibly easy to add to an entry). Coming soon to the site will be a Flash Game Demo, and the Store Locator module.

Browncoat For Life

The Serenity preview last night went incredibly well. I had 20 tickets to the show and Fatrick (my ex-roommate) had 16, so there was a large contingent of friends and friends-of-friends there. In addition to us (and the other Browncoats) Jewel Staite (who plays Kaylee) was there. She did a short welcome at the beginning and answered questions afterwards.

We got to see Joss’ welcome before the movie, and I swear I was getting misty-eyed because already having seen the movie once I knew the greatness he was talking about, and recognized how hard it would be to promote the movie to non-fans. Then we saw the movie. Every single person I went with was gushing about how great it was afterwards, even those who hadn’t really called themselves Firefly fans beforehand (and had only seen a few episodes).

So look, I know I get quite a bit of traffic from people I don’t know well (or at all) on this blog, so I’m telling you that if you don’t watch the Firefly series you are doing yourself a grave disservice. I firmly believe someone going in cold to the movie would still enjoy it — a lot. But you’ll miss out on some nuances, and you won’t have the full background. Also, Firefly is great.

You can rent Firefly from Netflix or your local video store, watch it on the Sci-Fi channel, buy the DVD set or hell download it online because afterwards you’ll probably want to get your own legal copy anyway.

Watch Firefly.
Then watch Serenity, and enjoy one of the best sci-fi movies ever.

Firefly Chinese Translation

In honor of tonight’s viewing of Serenity (my second, but for many their first) here’s a link to Firefly Chinese which translations all the Chinese cursing that goes on in the show. I do wish the DVD sets had these as an optional subtitle…

I’m going to do my best to memorize “Nee ta ma duh tyen-shia suo-yo duh run doh gai si.” which means “Fuck everyone in the universe to death.”

Serenity and All You Can Eat Meat

The Vancouver sneak-peek of Serenity (the Firefly movie) is Thursday at 10 pm, and I managed to get a bunch of tickets so not only can I see it again, but I’m bringing a bunch of friends with me.

So hey, let’s go to Samba and eat as much meat as possible. The movie’s at 10 and Samba is a great place to spend some time so I’m thinking we should get there at least two hours early for maximum meat packing, plus some travel time between Samba and the Paramount Theatre, so how about a 7:00 dinner? I’ll make a reservation for about 20 people, and tell them we might get more — Fatrick got himself a bunch of tickets as well, so his group might join us.

Batman Begins Well

Mel, Paul B, Denny and I caught the late show of Batman Begins last night and it was excellent. Christian Bale pulled off both a fully fleshed out Bruce Wayne character and a scary cool Batman that you could believe was really the same person. He had a lot of help from a smart, well-thought-out script that explains who Batman is and why he does what he does.

Actually, a lot of the movie is explanation, as you would expect from a good origin story, and it maintains a good balance between showing and telling.

Batman in action is great fun to see. Previous movies made him a slow “tank” that couldn’t even turn his head. In Batman Begins we see him as he should be seen — a criminal-terrifying ninja that strikes from the shadows and moves back so he can strike again. He has his gadgets, to be sure, but the man using them is far more important.

Gary Oldman is, of course, great as Seargent Gordon. I can’t think of a time I’ve ever disliked his acting, even in movies I haven’t liked. Katie Holmes does well in a difficult job — the love interest in a comic book action movie. She’s believable, tough without forcing it, and most important acceptable in a movie genre where the love interest typically instills cringes in an audience. Liam Neeson is excellent as Henri Ducard, a nasty mentor to the pre-Batman Wayne, and the training sequences are cool, though a little reminiscent of Highlander in spots.

Cillian Murphy (of 28 Days Later) makes a great creepy Scarecrow, deftly avoiding overplaying the creepiness which simply makes him more creepy because you know something is up with him but you can’t quite figure it out.

I normally don’t notice sound design in movies but watching Batman Begins in a DTS theatre I couldn’t help but note how great everything sounded, especially the “Batmobile”. It somehow sounded exactly like it should but also like a roaring lion. There were several other times throughout the movie when I thought “Wow, that sounds great!” so kudos to the sound team.

Anything bad about the movie? Well, being an origin story with a lot to tell it had a few pacing problems, but nothing major.

Overall I give Batman Begins an 8 Batarangs out of 10. Definitely the best Batman movie ever.

Battlefield 2’s Heavy Hand

I’ve been playing the Battlefield 2 demo quite a bit since last Friday when it was released. Not as much as I’d like because it’s pretty bug-ridden (corrupt textures, bluescreen, and half the time when I quit the game it refuses to set my desktop back to its original resolution and disables my ability to do it myself without a reboot.

Despite all that, it’s a really fun game and I was planning on pre-ordering it some time this week in the hopes that they’d patch the bugs at or shortly after the release of the full game.

Another big problem with the demo is that it has a 12 minute time limit in each round, which really isn’t enough time to get into the game. There’s no way to directly set the time limit in the game or in a config file, but some intrepid server admins have discovered that the “out of time check” is a simple line of Python code in a plain text file and have simply commented out that line so that the check never happens and their server’s game always continues until one team totally wins the map. I’ve played on both types of servers and the modded ones are far more fun and really pushed me towards preordering.

This “community update” from EA shows the stupidest knee-jerk response they could have taken: They claim to be supportive of mods, but they are now considering this a “hack” and are delisting/banning servers without a time limit for one week.

Of course, the gaming community is in an uproar, and rightfully so. The initial idea to have a time limit in the demo at all was stupid in the first place, but to come down with a heavy hand on those who have made a change so that they can enjoy your product demonstration even more is only going to push people away. It smacks of a stupid manager behind this project who simply does not understand the gaming community at all. You should be happy people are messing with your demo you idiots. It’s better than them ignoring it.

ONCOMING!

I’m glad our new car has an anti-theft device and an alarm.

Check out this entry and video of a meth addict stealing a bait car in Langley. The guy’s insane.

He had been charged with 123 criminal offences prior to this and only got four years for stealing three cars and breaking into several others. And he’ll probably be out in one or two years with “good behaviour”, then back on the street doing this shit again.

Joe, busy? Hah!

I’ve been really busy lately with a site for a new client. We’re short on time between now and the launch date and there’s much to do, including back-end tweaking of the CMS(Content Management System), a few databases set up, forms that access the databases, and more forms so that the client can update the data in the database, content, content, content, and I’m going to write a plugin for the CMS that does some really cool things (that I can’t talk about right now).

It’s sad that I’m busy now, what with GTA: San Andreas finally out for the PC, and the Battlefield 2 demo being released yesterday (and the game on June 22). Just before starting on this job I wasn’t all that busy — or at least not so busy that I couldn’t get in a decent amount of gaming.

Today Mel is at Undine’s Retreat with her mother as a Mother’s Day gift. After she gets back we’re heading in to Fatrick’s place for his housewarming. But between then and now, I’m taking some “personal time” and shooting (digital) people. I’m not sure if they’ll be soldiers or rival gang members yet.

16 Years Ago, One Man Stopped Four Tanks

Tiananmen Square Unknown Rebel
Happy 16th Anniversary to you Unknown Rebel. I remember seeing you live on CNN and getting totally choked up at your bravery.

As one of the Chinese pro-democracy movement’s leaders remarked, there is more than one hero in the Tank Man picture. Besides the person who risked his life stepping in front of the war machine, there is the tank driver who disobeyed his orders and refused to overrun his compatriot.
