May The Farce Be With You

Mel, Tony and I saw Star Wars: Episode III last night. Everybody’s claiming this is the best of the first three and even a very good movie overall, but Mel & I came out of it more annoyed than anything.

Without being spoilery, George Lucas seems to have an utter hatred of subtext and either hates or just doesn’t trust his actors. If a character in this movie is scared they say “I’m scared”. If they love someone they say “I love you.” If they are confused and not sure if they’re going the right thing or if they’re even on the right side they say “I’m confused and not sure if I’m doing the right thing or even if I’m on the right side.”

Sure, the action was pretty great and the humour added to it actually got a chuckle or two out of me rather than the previous episodes’ Jar-Jar antics which made me cringe. And yes, aside from his scenes with Amidala, Hayden Christensen was much better in this one.

But… (SPOILERS FOLLOW DO NOT CLICK UNLESS YOU’VE SEEN EPISODE 3)

Use the Couch, Luke

A few small updates. Thanks to Jim we’ve got a new couch and loveseat. This means we’re getting rid of the sectional, and will give it out freely to anyone who wants it (and will pick it up). It’s L shaped and in usable condition, though the springs are out in a few spots so it isn’t perfect. But for anyone who doesn’t have a couch it’d be good enough, and the price is right! If nobody I know wants it, I’ll widen the “free” offer. It’s not actual junk so it’d be a shame to send it to the dump.

Also, we’re going to see Star Wars Episode III at the Wednesday (technically Thursday) Midnight show at Silver City Mission. We’ve already ordered our tickets online (through that link) and if anyone else wants to join us, you should probably reserve them there too.

And a car update — it’s doing great and Mel & I have both been pretty giddy about our newfound freedom with it. I just finished Scotchguarding it now and it’s drying out. We’ve already been to Vancouver and back with it, and have done our first solo shopping trip in our own car in over a year.

The Newest Member of the Family

Our New Kia
The 2005 Kia Spectra5 SX (with Package 1) in “Espresso” colour.

Isn’t she beautiful? And all it cost us was crushing debt for five years! (Ok, I’ve already had people comment — it’s not really crushing, that was a joke).

Serenity Sneak Preview

Thanks to being a Browncoat I found out about a super special sneak preview of the upcoming (September 30th) Firefly movie entitled “Serenity”. Regular readers will know that I’m a huge fan of the TV series, and was really looking forward to this movie.

And now I’ve seen it.

OH.

MY.

WORD.

It’s an astounding achievement. It’s funny, action-packed, dramatic, and incredibly heart-wrenching. I don’t think I’ve ever been so emotionally invested in a movie since I was a kid. It has moments that are truly painful for the audience to bear, it’s true, but they make the overall effect of the movie that much stronger. It’s glorious and even thinking of it makes me a little misty-eyed that I was able to see the movie going in completely blind.

And that’s a big thing here for anyone planning on seeing the movie — do not under any circumstances read any spoilers whatsoever. I’m not kidding. The movie will be a hundred times better if you go in blind. I know that might be hard to do because the Internet will be full of people who got to see this sneak preview, but do what you can to stick your fingers in your digital ears and go “lalalalalala” whenever anyone tries to spoil this for you.

And I’ll see you at the official release of Serenity on opening day.

Oh and hey, Adam Baldwin was there. I didn’t realize how tall he was. I’m just shy of 5′11″ and he’s dwarfing me here, and is even leaning down a bit.

He was a great guy, very friendly to everyone even though he was obviously pretty tired near the end of the signing. We got some signed 8×10 promo pieces and some Serenity keychains, which unlike most promotional junk I get are already very dear to me.

It was an amazing experience.

Jess’s Blog

As we lost all the SQL(that’s the database entries) data for Jess’s blog we took this opportunity to set up her new blog on her own domain. I’m hosting it here on holycow which has nightly off-site backups thanks to Liquidweb being a great webhost and not a cheap piece of crap like Ace-Host.

Ok, enough ranting. The new domain is http://www.thepinkblog.com/
