New Dr. Who In Costume

A big thanks to the Goon who posted these pictures. Here’s the new Dr. Who (Christopher Eccleston) in his costume, along with his companion.

Strange Attractors

Haven’t done one of these in a while, mostly because the new ones are all terrible. When I see them on someone’s blog and it says “Your a Unicorn” I want to track down the creator and beat them over the head with a dictionary until they learn the difference between “your” and “you’re”.

Gravatars!

I’ve added functionality for Gravatars in my comments.

What are they? Well, if you’d like to have an 80×80 icon beside your comments on this (or any other Gravatar-enabled blog!) go to Gravatar.com and sign up with the email you use on blogs, and after activating it you can upload your avatar there. Whenever you leave a comment here (with that email address) my blog will automaticall add your avatar beside the comment. Nifty, eh?

They’ll even rate it based on MPAA ratings so that blogs who, say, only want G-Rated avatars displayed can do so.

Me, I allow R and under. I’d rather not worry about people getting “goatse’d” while reading my comments, so I left the X-rating out.

To see my avatar, read my first comment in this post.

That’s No Moon

Actually yes it is, but damn that looks eerily like the Death Star.

Don’t Panic

Check this out you hoopy froods. The casting seems perfect!

Martin Freeman (”Tim” from the BBC Comedy “The Office”) as Arthur Dent
Sam Rockwell (the bad guy from the first Charlie’s Angels movie, as well as the security officer “Guy Fleegman” on Galaxy Quest — the guy is a CHAMELEON) as Zaphod Beeblebrox
Mos Def as Ford Prefect. I thought he was excellent in The Italian Job, so I’m all for this choice.
Zooey Deschanel as Trillian. Again, a great choice.
Warwick Davis as Marvin the Paranoid Android. Talk about going the complete opposite direction for voices for that one. But I can see how it’d work out great.

John FUCKING Malkovich as Humma Kavula! Humma is a religious cult leader character created by Douglas Adams specifically for the film. Seems DA wanted each iteration of the story to be different, so he added more to the script he wrote for the movie. From some searching online, I believe he’s a cultist of The Great Green Arkleseizure, who created the Universe by sneezing out of his nose. His followers all live in fear of what they call “The Coming of the Great White Handkerchief” and are small blue creatures with more than fifty arms each, who are therefore unique in being the only race in history to have invented the aerosol deodorant before the wheel.

To say that I’m excited about this is an understatement.

Two years? Geez.

So today was my (and Mel’s, if you need all the information) two year wedding anniversary. Things are great. We’re not as wealthy as we’d like, but other than that there are really no complaints.

At least, not on my end. Who knows how womens’ minds work?

Mel had the day off (as well as the two surrounding days) but I didn’t, so we couldn’t really do much. We ended up watching I, Robot and having a few drinks. The movie was “meh”. Not as bad as expected, but only slightly better. I wouldn’t recommend spending theatre prices to see it.

Anchorman

Mel, Vik and I went to see Anchorman last night. I’ll give it a moderate thumbs-up. It was funny, but never rolling-on-the-floor funny. Probably best as a “cheap night” movie or a rental. Steve Carrell was brilliant, but under-used.

Update

Wow, has it been two weeks since my last entry? It’s not that nothing happened, more like a lot happened compared to my usual life. Though I enjoy being social, there’s a lot of inertia to overcome to get me out of the house to do something and even more to get me out of Chilliwack.

I like it here. I have an excellent sound system and DVD player for watching movies with (though no widescreen TV yet) and an excellent computer and XBox to play games on. My home (”It’s not a house, it’s a home” - Bob Dylan) is comfortable and friendly, rather than the sterile houses a lot of my married friends seem to end up in. They just feel too clean, too… wifey. And don’t get me started on kids in the house. Then you have to childproof the house and make sure everything is away and up. My home is organic. There’s stuff all over. The couches aren’t the greatest, but they’re obviously there to be sprawled on.

But I digress. The whole point of that was to show why I have this “social inertia” and to mention that I overcame it last weekend to attend a get-together of friends in White Rock at my ex-roommate Pat’s parents’ place. We caroused and played video games and ate and caroused some more. It really was a great time, even though I picked up a nasty cold from someone there, which ruined my Body For Life schedule, keeping me from working out on Monday and Tuesday. Don’t worry, I’m back on track.

Today Mel & I went to a barbecue for her contract at work — their one-year celebration. The weather was gorgeous and the house that held it had a great back porch for everyone to lounge on. (Despite being a computer geek and spending most of my time indoors in front of a big monitor, I love sunshine and fresh air. If I had a good notebook, I think I’d spend a lot of time doing my work on the picnic table in the back yard.) That porch was comfy and lived in like my house is, and made me think about doing some work on our back patio to make it more inviting. But we just rent, and I have too many other planned-but-probably-never-to-be-started projects already.

Tuesday will be Mel & my second wedding anniversary. Where does the time go? Yes, naysayers, we’re still together and still crazy about each other. Well, I’m crazy-in-love with her and she has to be some kind of crazy to still be with me, but let’s not quibble over terms. We don’t really have any special plans to celebrate. I suspect we’ll wait for the weekend and do something like have a nice dinner, but neither of us see the benefit behind throwing a lot of money away at arbitrary celebrations. We’re together and we’re happy, and every day should be a celebration of what we’ve got (ps: it usually is). Besides, we did plenty of celebrating last weekend, and I’m not as young as I used to be.

So there’s the update. More later.

Strange New Worlds

Looks like the Hubble has (probably) discovered a hundred new planets! If this quote doesn’t get you excited, I don’t know what will:

If confirmed it would almost double the number of planets known to be circling other stars to about 230.

The discovery will lend support to the idea that almost every sunlike star in our galaxy, and probably the Universe, is accompanied by planets.

Now before anyone thinks I’m a UFO nut, I don’t believe we’ve been visited. I am of the opinion that if we’re the only life in the entire Universe, it’d be a pretty big waste of space.

Spiderman 2

I’m sure you’ve all heard by now, but I’ll mention it anyway: Spiderman 2 is incredibly good. It’s better than the original by leaps and bounds, and I loved the original.

I’ve never been a Doctor Octopus fan, and didn’t think he was a very good choice when I first heard the plans for this sequel, but WOW was I proven wrong. Alfred Molina is incredible, giving “Doc Ock” incredible depth and pathos. The story was excellent, really driving home how hard it is to be a hero all the time. Sure, that message has been tried before, but never so successfully in a big action movie.

Oh, and speaking of the action, it’s fantastic. The fighting is both comic book and real. My “suspenders of disblief” were never snapped once despite some absolutely incredible stuff going on. I was fully immersed in the world Sam Raimi and his cast and crew (oh yeah, and Stan Lee) created for me.

Flawless.
