It would have to be the summer of 95 at the Mopesters. The summer long NHL 94 battle royale on the computer. Joe hammered us all and took the Canucks to the Stanley Cup. The very next year, the Canucks almost won the Stanley Cup.
Coincidence? you decide.
I remember when a handful of us were rehearsing for the play Merchant of Venice, and the director wanted us to pretend to drink tequila and act a little drunk. The rest of us were a sheltered lot, so Joe went and got a real bottle of tequila for us to rehearse with. Over several retries we were quite lubricated, and our performances were based off of actually experiencing drunkenness, not just pretending.
I remember coming up to Canada to hang out with his roommate unsure if Joe and I were to get along at all, due to his confidence in his opinions. I was welcomed into his home and treated with such incredible kindness that I’d really never encountered from anyone within such a short time of knowing them. The thing that stick out in my mind most of that trip was stumbling home after going to the nightclub just up the street from his home and listen to Joe tell me to “Hit it dude. Just think, what would Carl Sagan do.” Complete with pantomimed motions on the stairs.
“I’d hit it, but I’m you friend, so I’ll let you hit it.”
