Or so it seems. According to this article a side-effect of the Canadian levy on recordable media is that it makes file sharing legal here because the recording industry is accepting payment to make up for it.
It’s no secret that I loathe the RIAA and what they do to both musicians (rip them off with promises of “making it big” when in fact you’re better off winning a lottery than actually making a lot of money from your music) and fans (sue them, charge more money for a 20-cent manufacturing cost product than they did back when it cost them $5) and I’ll admit that the levy ticked me off at first, but I’m loving that I can now flip the RIAA the bird.
Not that I keep Kazaa Lite ++ Edition on all the time sharing files — I’ve found that it overwhelms my cable connection to the point that I get packetloss when playing online games and THAT WILL NOT DO.
