Neil Gaiman Bibliography
Compiled by Lance "Squiddie" Smith

Here's an updated Gaiman bibliography. The Locus Index provided some of this info and I got some pointers from this group. Thanks.

If anyone has the Robert Bloch appreciation, I could use some help.

There's still some entries from the Locus website that I need to add, so I should be posting again in May.

Notes:

1. In SimCity 2000 if you click on the "Ruminate" button in the info window for a library you get a Gaiman essay on cities.

2. In issue #6 of Rick Veitch's "The One," Gaiman takes part in a discussion with Tom Veitch and Stephen Bissette on the changing nature of superheroes. This is reprinted in the King Hell trade paperback.

3. Not sure what to do with the Tekno Comics that included Gaiman's name in the title. By most accounts, Gaiman had little to do with the books other than providing the original outlines for the titles and the occasional suggestion. In the first Wheel of Worlds comic there are, however, some of his sketches for characters.

4. Gaiman remains listed as a consultant on the Books of Magic series. He is also reported to be a consultant for the future Sandman Presents spin-off starting later this year.

5. I still don't acknowledge that rumored early book. Nope. Not going to do it. I suppose if someone were to send me a copy. And the mounting evidence of an article in Melody Maker sways me not at all.

6. Gaiman has letters to the editor(s) in Instant Piano #3, Horus, Lord of Light (1963 #5), Captain Confederacy #4, Tyrant #1 and  Eddie Campbell's Bacchus #1. The letters in Instant Piano and Bacchus look like they were converted e-mail messages. In Overstreet FAN Vol. 1 Issue 11, instead of a short story based on a Lisa Snellings sculpture, there's a letter from the set of Neverwhere.

7. SATAN 1.X software uses an image of the program's namesake designed by Gaiman.

8. The sixth Sandman shirt (with Dave McKean art) includes a block of text by Gaiman describing Morpheus. This is snatched out of Gaiman's script for Sandman #17.

9. Gaiman is co-responsible for the concept of Alice Cooper's "The Last Temptation." Gaiman says he also wrote a few lines of the lyrics.

10. As far as I know, Neil Gaiman has never written a Tintin book.(And if you understand that reference then I appreciate you taking the time to read this, Mr. Newman.)

11. On p.156 of the third edition of DC Heroes RPG there is an inset labeled "Post Card from Neil Gaiman" that describes Gaiman's views on magic in the DC universe. A longer essay was apparently lost in a computer crash.

12. Along with his entries for Diana Wynne Jones and R.A. Lafferty, there's an entry for Neil Gaiman in the Encyclopedia of Fantasy.

13. Gaiman is quoted in Stanley Wiater's _Dark Thoughts: On Writing_ (Underwood Books. 1997). The book is a collection of thoughts from writers of horror and dark fantasy about the writing process.

14. Screenplay "Day of the Dead", an episode of Babylon Five that aired on TNT in March.

15. Voice work as Baal in the pilot of Archangel Thunderbird.

16. Upcoming stuff:

  • A hardcover collection of Stardust is due out in October and a trade paperback would be out a year after that.
  • The contract with Avon was for three books. The first was Neverwhere. The second is to be a collection of short works with a November release and a title of _Smoke and Mirrors_. The third is to be a novel entitled something like _Time of Smoke_.
  • The Flash Girls used to perform a song called something like "A Meaningful Dialogue" that Gaiman wrote. In a Magian Line interview Gaiman refers to it as the LaLaLaLaLa song. Perhaps it will appear on a future Flash Girls' album should there be any.
  • A story in an upcoming comic mini-series of Will Eisner's The Spirit. This is to be published by Kitchen Sink possibly in the spring of 1998. (Should be in the second of four issues.) Art by "Young" Eddie Campbell. Best guess says about April/May.
  • A three-part adaptation of "Only the End of the World Again" in Oni Double Feature starting in June.
  • An adaptation of "Troll Bridge" in Colleen Doran's A Distant Soil #25.
  • A possible movie version of Neverwhere from Jim Henson Pictures
  • The English translation of the Japanese movie Mononoke Hime (Princess Mononoke or Phantom Princess)
  • The connecting story (with Sergio Aragones) for an upcoming House of Mystery special due in May.

17. Still a handful of odds and ends out there that I don't have complete info on.

  • An entry in the Harlan Ellison ashcan from a previous Chicago Comic convention
  • Gaiman's interview with Lou Reed for the Reflex magazine
  • Lots of stuff from Escape, Imagine, Fantasy Tales, Space Voyager, Today, Time Out, American Fantasy, FantasyEmpire.
