 | Lunch With Neil Posted by puck at 3:00 AM PDT

Kate Burall & Pete Lenz posted the URL of their "Lunch With Neil" along with the background story to alt.fan.neil-gaiman:
I had ordered 2 copies of the leather-bound-limited-edition of Neil's "Angels and Visitations" (great book, by the way) from DreamHaven (hi, guys!). I waited with great anticipation. Time went by...no books. So I called DreamHaven. The reply was there was delay at the binders because of the low print numbers, so bigger orders were pushing A&V back. So I waited some more. Still no books. So I called again.
DreamHaven was very apologetic, but there wasn't much they could do about the bindery delay, so they asked what they could do for me in the mean time. My reply was "OK, how about lunch with Neil?" The laughter in the background told me I was on a speaker phone. The answer was "I'll see what I can do." Thinking it was just a joke, I was surprised by a box in the mail. It was too odd shaped to be the books, so I opened it carefully. There was a Green Giant can of Nibblets signed by Neil with a drawing of Sandman. The note read "Here's lunch with Neil". It sits on the shelf with the statues, and other Sandman collectables.
We mentioned the can on the newsgroup before and found SquidBoy, who had been lucky enough to be on tour with Neil and Dave, and unlucky enough to find something to satisfy a long-distance lunch with Neil. So...over to SquidBoy for his side of the story. |

Toymania News reports that the plans for the Death/Vertigo Beanie Babies has been scrapped:
In other DC-related news, we have learned that plans to produce bean bag toys of popular DC and Vertigo characters have been scrapped. No official reason was given for the decision. Perhaps this is a signal that the bean bag craze is cooling.
Thanks to Scott Green for that one.
Toymania also adds:
ToyFare magazine reported in its latest issue that a line of Vertigo PVC figures are in development. |

Lance Smith saw on ToyMania News that DC has green-lighted a Golden Age Sandman figurine to be developed for 1999.
Just below that, some shocking news:
DC is also developing a few bean bag character toys (a la Beanie Babies). The first two characters are slated to be Lobo and Death. They hope to have these two beanies in stores before Christmas.
Beanie Death and Beanie Lobo? What's the world coming to? I'm appalled! Shocked! Horrified! Um... and I want one. |

 | Mirimax Mononoke Press Release Posted by puck at 3:00 AM PDT

The obviously overworked Miramax web site has a similar news article. I'm posting it here because I kept getting "Request Failed" responses when looking for it myself.
Miramax has signed Neil Gaiman, the creator/writer of the award-winning monthly cult DC Comics series Sandman, to write an English-language dubbed version of PRINCESS MONONOKE. The highest-grossing film in Japanese history, the animated PRINCESS MONONOKE wil be distributed in the US next year by Miramax Films.
Based loosely on Japanese Fooklore, PRINCESS MONONOKE is the animated tale of the war between the encroaching civilization of man and the beast gods of the forest, which threatens to unbalance the forces of nature.
"I couldn't be more excited to write this script," said Gaiman. "My goal is to remain faithful to the story while providing a translation that a non-Japanese audience will be able to follow. To that end, I've been researching Japanese folklore."
Directed by Japan's leading animator, the acclaimed Hayao Miyazaki, whose Studio Ghibli has created a string of critically acclaimed, award-winning animated films, PRINCESS MONONOKE has been eagerly anticipated outside of Japan. The only film to break $150 million (US) at the Japanese box office, PRINCESS MONONOKE even topped "E.T." and Jurassic Park," the only other films to break $100 million (US) in that country.
Gaiman is the creator/writer of the monthly DC Comics cult series "Sandman" which has won numerous honors including the Will Eisner Comic Industry Award for the Best Writer four years in a row; the Best Graphic Album - reprint award in 1991, and the best graphic album - New Award in 1993. In addition, at the annual Harvey Awards, Gaiman was named Best Writer two years in a row, and "Sandman" was named Best Continuing Series in 1992. "Sandman" #19 also took the 1991 World Fantasy Award for the best short story - the first comic book ever to be honored with a literary award. The Sandman collections have sold over 750,000 copies in paperback and hardcover, and Warner Bros. has optioned rights for a "Sandman" feature films. |

Shun Chan found this on The Hollywood Reporter and passed it along to me:
Gaiman dubbed for 'Mononoke' By Thom Geier
NEW YORK -- Miramax Films has signed cult comic book creator Neil Gaiman to write an English-language script for "Princess Mononoke," which last year became Japan's all-time top-grossing film.
The animated feature, the only film to gross $150 million at the Japanese boxoffice, follows the story of a girl in ancient Japan raised by a wolf goddess. Directed by leading Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki of Studio Ghibli, the film in its dubbed version is due for U.S. release next year.
"My goal is to remain faithful to the story while providing a translation that a non-Japanese audience will be able to follow," said Gaiman, who conceived and wrote the award-winning DC Comic series "Sandman," collections of which have sold more than 750,000 copies.
Warner Bros. has optioned the rights for a "Sandman" feature as well as Gaiman's three-part 1993 series "Death: The High Cost of Living." He has been contracted to write a script for the latter, as well as for "Neverwhere" for Jim Henson Prods., based on his 1997 novel of the same name.
"We're big fans of Neil Gaiman's work," Miramax co-chairman Harvey Weinstein said. "This is the perfect project for his sensibility and talent." |

There's an interview with Neil on Addicted To Noise, mentioning that he's working on a script to be produced by Tim Burton and also mentions "the book". Thanks Eppy & Chris for passing that along. |
