Deus Ex's Sandman Easter Egg
Posted by puck at 6:42 AM PST | Comments (6)
I found this a while ago, but forgot about the screenshot I'd taken. Ion Storm's superb 3D-shooter-rpg game Deus Ex is incredibly immersive, allowing you to read books, manipulate objects, hack computers, etc.

While reading the guest registry at a run-down hotel, I found this.

For those without a graphical browser, it's a guest registry for the hotel, with the final entry being for "Hippolyta Hall, Los Angeles"

Princess Mononoke released on DVD
Posted by lucy_anne at 9:27 AM PST | Comments (0)
According to Nausicaa.net, Princess Mononoke was released on DVD on December 19th. They also report that the subtitles will be based on the translation of the original Japanese dialogue, rather than Neil's script; if anyone can verify that, please drop me an email.

There's a review of the DVD at Ain't It Cool, and it can be purchased at Amazon.

Neil Gaiman special at ECC
Posted by lucy_anne at 4:16 PM PST | Comments (0)
EddieCampbellComics.com not only has a story about the Legends of the Green Flame project, but also has a five page feature about past collaborations between Eddie Campbell and Neil. The special includes Neil's reviews of an Alec comic, an introductions to a Deadface collection, scans of comics featuring Neil that Eddie has drawn over the years, and more.

Sadly, this information is not going to remain on the site for much longer. It is certainly worth checking out.

Many thanks to Mute, both for the heads up, and for creating the special to start with.

'The Jacket' Pictures
Posted by puck at 7:22 PM PST | Comments (0)
Madame Melpomene, winner of the CBLDF's ebay auction for Neil's leather jacket (henceforth referred to as The Jacket) has posted pictures of people wearing The Jacket to her web site.

She notes that she'll take your picture in the jacket for a measly $10 donation to the CBLDF. Track her movements here. Melpomene, the thingies are watching. :)

Sandman's Emotional Effect Survey
Posted by puck at 10:41 PM PST | Comments (2)
Stephen Rauch is writing a thesis on The Sandman as modern mythology and needs your help (originally posted on alt.fan.neil-gaiman):

Hi All,
I've been lurking for a while, and I was hoping you could help me out with something. I'm currently writing a thesis on Sandman as a modern mythology. I've got some material looking at the series from an intellectual perspective, how it combines elements from so many systems of belief and makes them sing together. But what I really want is something about the series' emotional effect on its readers. I guess I'm looking for stories of personal transformation (not to sound too flaky), that aren't just my own, or why certain parts of Sandman have meant so much to people. I get the feeling that there are people out there for whom the series has meant as much as it has for me. Anyway, I'd love to hear your stories (and it ALL comes down to stories, doesn't it?), even if you don't want to be quoted in the actual paper, since it's something I've been curious about for a while. Feel free to post responses here, but what I'd really prefer is email (srauch1@swarthmore.edu).

Thanks for all your help.

Pleasant dreams,
Stephen

Omen-ous Gilliam Interview
Posted by puck at 10:39 PM PST | Comments (0)
Danny found a Terry Gilliam interview on IGN Filmforce. Here's a snippet he posted on alt.fan.neil-gaiman:

PLUME: So what is your interest now, post-Quixote?

GILLIAM: Tony Grisoni and I are going to be doing Good Omens. I don't
know if you know the book...

PLUME: That is the one that was talked about possibly being in
conjunction with you a few months ago, wasn't it?

GILLIAM: Yeah... Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett. There is a British
company called Renaissance Films that is handing over some money to us
to write it and hopefully make it after Quixote. It's a good tale. The
book, on the Web, seems to be, like, the 11th most talked-about sci-fi
book out there... it's not really sci-fi... it's about the Antichrist...

PLUME: So you're making another children's tale...

GILLIAM: Well that's it. Exactly. It's the Angel from the Garden of
Eden and the Serpent from the Garden of Eden – who have now, a thousand
years later, grown soft on humanity. They're like a couple of
ambassadors to some banana republic, and they've been away from their
home countries for a very long time and they've gone a bit native.
Unfortunately, the Antichrist is delivered and the whole place is going
to come to an end in a few days – and they don't really want it to
happen. So that's what it's all about.

PLUME: So it will make the perfect Terry Gilliam film...

GILLIAM: It's got a lot of the elements – the same old elements.

PLUME: Is it surprising how all of these "fan favorites" keep finding
their way to you?

GILLIAM: Yeah. I guess you become a magnet for certain things. I guess
they decide that there's nobody else out there that is quite on the
same wavelength.
