Harlequin Valentine
Posted by puck at 6:16 PM PST | Comments (0)
From Lance "Squiddie" Smith on the alt.fan.thingie:

Just to confirm Gaiman's blog entry from Friday, Harlequin Valentine ships this week and should be on North American comic racks this week. (No promises to the rest of the world.)

Earlier, Dark Horse brought in 1000 copies that were allocated (about one per shop) by Diamond. This looks like the rest of the print run that took the slow boat from Sinapore.

Here's the Dark Horse link:

Neil Gaiman Files Suit Against Todd McFarlane Productions
Posted by puck at 7:19 PM PST | Comments (0)
Straight from Andy Heidel himself, here's the press release:
For Immediate Release: Date: 1/24/02

AUTHOR NEIL GAIMAN FILES SUIT AGAINST "SPAWN’S"
TODD MCFARLANE PRODUCTIONS, INC., TMP INTERNATIONAL, INC.
AND TODD MCFARLANE WORLDWIDE, INC.

MADISON, WISCONSIN FEDERAL COURT: Neil Gaiman, author of the New York Times best-selling novel American Gods and creator of the immensely successful Sandman® comic book series, has filed suit in federal court in Madison, Wisconsin, against Todd McFarlane and his companies. McFarlane, best known for his three million-dollar investment in Mark McGuire’s 70th homerun baseball, initiated the comic book "SPAWN®." The lawsuit concerns McFarlane’s unauthorized use of characters created by Gaiman, as well as McFarlane’s wrongful claim to the Alan Moore/Neil Gaiman authored comic property MiracleMan™. The nine-count suit includes allegations of fraud and copyright violations and non-payment of royalties regarding the comic art characters "Angela," "Cogliostro" and "Medieval Spawn," that Gaiman created.

Mr. Gaiman stated: "This suit is not about the money, it’s about respecting the rights of the creator and keeping promises." Co-lead counsel for Mr. Gaiman in this lawsuit, Kenneth F. Levin, a nationally known trial lawyer and expert in comic art rights noted: "We did everything we could to get this solved outside the courts."

Mr. Gaiman is joined as a plaintiff by Marvels and Miracles, LLC, a Wisconsin limited liability company which owns the MiracleMan rights of acclaimed writer Alan Moore and of illustrator Mark Buckingham, the original artist on the MiracleMan comic books which Mr. Gaiman authored, and Mr. Gaiman’s rights. The plaintiffs’ attorneys also include Madison, Wisconsin trial attorneys Alan Arntsen and Jeff Simmons of the international law firm Foley & Lardner, supported by Madison, Wisconsin attorney Jon Manzo. The Foley & Lardner trial team also includes Mark Hellmann, one of the country’s leading intellectual property attorneys.

His most recent novel, American Gods published by William Morrow, debuted in June 2001 in hardcover on the New York Times bestseller list. "People in the News", Associated Press, January 25, 2002.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) Writer Neil Gaiman, creator of the ``Sandman'' comic book series, has sued another comic book creator, alleging fraud, copyright violations and nonpayment of royalties.
Gaiman, author of the novel ``American Gods,'' claims Todd McFarlane used the characters he created ``Angela,'' ``Cogliostro'' and ``Medieval Spawn'' without his authorization.
McFarlane, who created the comic book and animated HBO show ``Spawn,'' made headlines in 1999 when he paid $3 million for the baseball Mark McGuire hit for his then-record 70th home run in a season.
The lawsuit filed Thursday in U.S. District Court also alleges that McFarlane made a wrongful claim to ``MiracleMan,'' a comic book series Gaiman co-wrote with Alan Moore.
``This suit is not about the money, it's about respecting the rights of the creator and keeping promises,'' Gaiman said in statement released Thursday.
A spokesman for Tempe, Ariz.-based Todd McFarlane Productions Inc. did not immediately return a telephone message seeking comment.
Marvels and Miracles, a Wisconsin company, also is a plaintiff in the lawsuit. The company owns the ``MiracleMan'' rights of Gaiman, Moore and illustrator Mark Buckingham, the original artist on the ``MiracleMan'' comic books.

And if it hasn't made the rounds, I apologize.

No, things are not letting up in the new year. Like everything else in this past year, that turned out to be so much wishful thinking.
