4 Social Media Myths Every Small Business Owner Should Know

Here’s a great article on Design Shack: 4 Social Media Myths Every Small Business Owner Should Know.

Yes, social media is important and you should use it as best as you can. It’s also not that difficult, and certainly doesn’t require overpaid “Social Media Experts”.

Talk to your customers (but don’t shout). Listen to what they say (but they may not be right). If you treat them well and with respect they’ll like you, and when someone likes you they’ll be much more likely to tell their friends. That’s Social Media.

The “Search Engine Optimization” Scam

I was going to write an article about “SEO Marketing” that’s been cropping up on the web these days, but Derek Powazek has already done it better than I could, so go read Spammers, Evildoers, and Opportunists.

The One True Way

Which brings us, finally, to the One True Way to get a lot of traffic on the web. It’s pretty simple, and I’m going to give it to you here, for free:

Make something great. Tell people about it. Do it again.

I’d also note that a great many “SEO Marketing Specialists” have taken up that job title after attending a get-rich-quick seminar.  They’ve been fooled just like they’re trying to fool you.

New Holy Cow Theme Launches!

After way too long we’ve finally updated the Holy Cow Design site with a new look.  As we suggest to all our clients we’re using the excellent open-source software WordPress to power the back-end of our site.  While WordPress started as simply “blogging” software it has grown into a top-notch, secure and stable content management system.

With the addition of the excellent (and free!) WP Super Cache plugin you get the benefits of a database-driven content system with the speed and “Digg-proof” power of standard HTML files.

So where do we go from here?  Well, content is king and it’s about time we started providing some.  Subscribe to our blog’s RSS feed to get instant notification of new articles, which will be coming out soon.

We’ll be talking about good design, good layout, and just what the heck a web site is for anyway.  We’ll be brutally honest about the failure of “manager designs” ((A web design created to please the company’s manager, not its potential clients)) and the ridiculous trend in “SEO marketing” that people have bought into lately.

In short, we’re going to share over a decade’s worth of knowledge about the web, design, and web marketing.

For free.

Stay tuned.
